Subungal Exostosis
Subungal Exostosis
- An exostosis is present along the dorso-medial aspect of the
left great toe.
- The
AP view of the foot confirms the medial location.
- Pain and ulceration of the nail bed are present clinically.
Both clinical and radiographic findings are characteristic of Subungal
Exostosis.
You may wish to review some facts concerning Subungal Exostosis:
- Benign bone tumor involving distal phalanx.
- A dorso-medial location is characteristic.
- Size of lesion is about 1 cm in diameter.
- Histologically has a fibrocartilagenous cap on a base
of trabecular bone -- features that distinguish it
from a typical osteochondroma.
- Causes pain, swelling, ulceration of nail bed.
- Great toe involved in 70-80% of cases.
